Treatment for Dry Eyes at Aloma Eye Associates
in Winter Park, FL

There are many treatment options for dry eyes which are highly dependant upon the cause and severity of the condition. Many mild forms of DED can be alleviated using artificial tears or lubricant eye drops to make up for the lack of natural tears usually produced by your eyes. If over-the-counter drops don’t alleviate your symptoms, your doctor might prescribe prescription drops that actually stimulate tear production or steroids for short-term relief.

More severe cases of dry eyes might be treated with a punctal insert which is a tiny insert containing a slow-release lubricating substance that is placed inside the lower eyelid. Since DED is often related to eyelid inflammation known as blepharitis your doctor may prescribe a heated hot compress mask, specialty eyelid scrubs and sometimes an antibiotic ointment. Finally, punctal plugs might be recommended for severe cases which would be inserted into the tear ducts to reduce the tear drainage in your eyes to keep them from drying out.

Aloma Eye Associates takes pride in being able to provide our patients with Oasis TEARS. Oasis TEARS is a new type of eye drop with a unique formula, optimized to provide long-lasting comfort. coats and re-lubricates to provide long-lasting relief from dry eye.

During your dry eye exam, we will also evaluate your eye lids, to check the glands. Located in both upper and lower lids, the meibomian glands produce complex oils that stabilize the tear film and prevent tear evaporation. If or when the meibomian glands are not working correctly, dry eye usually occurs. We will directly assess the health of your meibomian glands.

Xiidra®

xiidra

Approved to Treat Signs & Symptoms of Dry Eye Disease

Xiidra® comes in eye drop form, and the prescription for most people will be a drop in each eye twice a day. One main difference between Restasis, a decade-old medication used to treat dry eye, and Xiidra® is that Xiidra® is approved to treat not just dry eye signs but its symptoms as well.

That distinction is because of the nature of the product. Xiidra® stops a chemical chain reaction in the cells. When the drop hits the eye, the drop binds with proteins in the cells that stop the signals that would otherwise create many of the problems and symptoms of dry eye including itching, burning, pain, and redness. This effect can be noticed quite quickly!

Xiidra® was found to start working in test subjects as early as two weeks after the beginning of the application and most felt the difference within 12 weeks. That’s a huge jump forward from Restasis, which typically takes about six months before a real difference is felt by users.

RESTASIS®

FDA-approved to help you make more of your own tears

Your own real tears are a real possibility. RESTASIS®—the one and only prescription medication FDA-approved to help you make more of your own tears —is available in a multidose bottle. RESTASIS® and RESTASIS MultiDose™ help increase your eyes’ natural ability to produce tears, which may be reduced by inflammation due to Chronic Dry Eye. RESTASIS® and RESTASIS MultiDose™ did not increase tear production in patients using anti-inflammatory eye drops of tear duct plugs.

Daily dietary supplementation with a unique combination of omega fatty acids (GLA, EPA and DHA) for six months is effective in improving ocular irritation symptoms and halting the progression of inflammation that characterizes moderate to severe dry eye.

Omega 3 Fish Oil for Dry Eyes

Studies have found that re- esterified triglyceride omega-3 supplements helps dry eye. The study found improvements in tear osmolarity, omega-3 index levels, tear break-up time and other measurements related to dry eye syndrome. The daily intake for this study was 560 mg of DHA and 1680 mg of EPA.

Omega 3 fatty acids occur naturally in fish. These antioxidants have been shown to have significant across-the-board health benefits. Our bodies are not capable of producing omega-3 fatty acids. Thus, the American Heart Association recommends eating oily fish twice a week and/or taking a daily supplement. If you eat farmed fish, make sure it’s organically grown. While there are food sources of omega-3’s, cardiac patients and those suffering from dry eye may need take supplements. Fish oil supplements are purified and concentrated as part of the manufacturing process.

There are three types of fish oil supplements:

  • triglyceride (backbone)
  • re-esterified triglyceride
  • ethyl esters
